IITs (Indian Institutes of Technology)

The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) are a network of government-controlled public technological institutes spread across India. They are owned by the Government of India's Ministry of Education. They were classified as Institutes of National Importance by the Institutes of Technology Act of 1961, establishing their authority, responsibility, and governance structure as the nation's top technological institutions.

There are now 23 IITs, as defined by the Institutes of Technology Act of 1961. Each IIT is autonomous and is linked to the others by an inter-institutional council (IIT Council), which oversees its activities. The IIT Council is officially presided over by the Indian Minister of Education. Sir Jogendra Singh of the Viceroy's Executive Council convened a committee in 1946 to investigate the construction of Higher Technical Institutions for India's post-war industrial growth, which is almost where the history of the IIT system began.

The 22-member team, chaired by Nalini Ranjan Sarkar, proposed the creation of these schools, modeled after the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), with linked secondary institutions.

NITs (National Institutes of Technology)

The Government of India founded National Institutes of Technology, which are renowned for their high-quality education and research. NITs are located around the country and provide undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in engineering, science, and management.

In the 1950s and 1960s, India founded the National Institutes of Technology (NITs) as a network of regional engineering schools with the purpose of improving technical education and research throughout the country. These colleges have matured through time into renowned institutions of national importance, providing exceptional education in a variety of engineering areas.
