UTKAL UNIVERSITY

Utkal University is the oldest University of state of Odisha. It is located at Vani Vihar, Bhubaneswar and is also the 17th Oldest University in India. It is one of the Premier Universities of India and has contributed immensely in the development of Odisha. With its distinguished history, remarkable achievements in academics and research it has been able to carve out a distinguished identity of it and therefore, referred as the Mother University in the state. The University is accredited from National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) and recognized from University Grants Commission (UGC).

The Utkal University Act, 1943 was passed by the Governor’s assent on 2nd August 1943. The foundation of Utkal University was laid on 27th November, 1943 and the university commenced its functioning from this date onward from Room No. 15, Ravenshaw College, Cuttack. The territorial jurisdiction of the university was not defined in The Utkal University Act, 1943 and so the act was amended in the year 1947 where its territorial jurisdiction was clearly specified. In the beginning the University worked as a affiliating body but in 1949 it took over the management of under-graduate Department of Law of Ravenshaw College and thereafter, established its first constituent college which was called as Madhusudhan Law College, Cuttack.

The Utkal University caters the educational and academic needs of about 1.5 crore people which belong to nine districts of the state of Odisha. Utkal University is a teaching, research cum-affiliating university and offers around 27 full-fledged regular Post-Graduate departments and 17 self-financing programmes within the campus premises. The University has around 371 colleges affiliated to it which covers faculties of Humanities and the Social Sciences, Science & Technology, Commerce and Management, Pedagogical Science, Medicine (including Ayurveda), Homeopathy and Law.

The University focuses to provide Excellence in Higher Education and emphasizes on innovative teaching, learning, research and consultancy. It aims to build up creative, enlightened and productive society.

The territorial jurisdiction of the university is spread over 9 districts – Angul, Cuttack,  Dhenkanal, Jajpur, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, Khurda, Nayagarh and Puri and the total area of the university is spread in around 24973 sq. Kms. Presently, the university has 26 Post Graduate teaching and research departments which are located within the premises of the campus. There are three constituent institutions also.

DISTANCE LEARNING

The University has a distance learning centre called as Distance Education Centre of Utkal University which is also known as DDCE UTKAL UNIVERSITY. The centre is very famous for providing high Quality Distance Education in Odisha. It offers various B.A. courses in subjects such as Odia, Political Science, Education, Sanskrit, Sociology and English.

CAMPUS

The University campus is situated right in the middle of Bhubaneswar City on National Highway - 16, and is 5kms far from airport and 3 kms away from the railway station. It has Sainik School in its north and Mancheswar Industrial Area to its east.

All the 26 Postgraduate teaching and research departments and Law Colleges are located within the campus itself. The campus has separate hostel facilities for men and women students both. The hostels for boys are Gopabandhu Chhatrabas, Madhusudan Chhatrabas, Fakir Mohan Chhatrabas, Godabarish Chhatrabas, Nilakantha chhatrabas and Acharya Harihar Chhatrabas. The campus also has the library called as “Parija Library” which was named after the great botanical scientist Prana Krushna Parija. The other facilities at the campus include canteen, Healthcare Centre, NSS, Sports Council, Placement Cell, Population Research Center, Parija Library, guest House, Computer Centres, etc.
