6. The Comparison

In our bid to bring to light the standing of regionally Popular Private Colleges and universities, we turn our attention to UP, the cultural and economic heartland of North India.

Galgotias vs GLA vs Sharda vs GL Bajaj

Galgotias, GLA, Sharda and GL Bajaj are some of the Top Private Institutions in UP

Like most states in India, engineering remains the primary choice of most UG aspirants in the state. Besides the career-defining significance of doing a B.Tech from a decent college, engineering is also considered the safest way to a stable life in UP.

This notion is shared by most mid-income level families across India. No other field of study in India (except medicine) generates as much approvability as engineering does. The reasons for this level of acceptance are many. Firstly, the prestige of becoming an engineer from a good college is highly gratifying its own right, IITians are treated like royalty in many circles, for the simple reason that they ‘supposedly’ represent the best analytical and technical minds in our country.

Secondly, the economic benefits of doing a B.Tech range from relatively good to amazing. You will find a mere handful of B.Com and B.Sc graduates making more than 10 LPA, even if they graduated from the best college in India. However, such a package is fairly common even in some Tier 2 engineering colleges. This suggests the jobs market values engineers much more than other degree holders.

Another reason is the associated safety in the field of engineering. In a turbulent jobs market where one line of work can suddenly become redundant, engineering is viewed as a field which represents continuity and job security. Engineering is partly viewed as a safe degree because engineers are highly versatile professionals compared to their counterparts from medical, management or humanities background.

This point is backed up by statistics which show IT companies hiring mechanical engineering for coding jobs. Even though mechanical engineers lack the necessary credentials for becoming a full-stack software engineer, IT companies hire them because they are capable enough to learn and adjust in a different environment. The same can be said about seats at most top IIMs being filled by top engineers from IITs and not by B.Com and BBA graduates for whom the degree is more naturally suited.

If one delves further, bringing up more reasons wouldn’t be a hard task. They key point to understand here is that while some reasons are factually true, it does not mean that other courses are in any way less on a fundamental basis. However, the nature of the current academic curriculum and the market demand is swayed towards the side of engineering as the preferred field of study.

From the expansiveness of discussing engineering on a whole, we will return to UP engineering colleges and universities. Before that though, we will discuss the factors used for comparison.

The Factors

The factors are listed below:

1. Placements

Since we will be keeping engineering as our main focus here, it is prudent to point out the factor which is most popular amongst B.Tech aspirants. If one removed the prospect of landing a placement on campus for B.Tech students, the number of engineering aspirants will begin to reduce drastically over time.

Most students make it their business to find out a given college/university’s track record in terms of placements, and they should. There are often cases where the colleges and universities morph their placement data to lure students into taking admission, only to backtrack later.

The easiest way to find a given college/university’s placement data is to check the same on their website. Every college which has a good placement record will voluntarily offer all placement details on their website.

If a college does not provide details, you can assume that the placement scene at the given institution is not all rosy.

2. Student perception of a college/university

Student perception regarding a particular college may not seem like a highly ‘circumstantial’ reason to choose a college. However, when put into perspective, placement can become a highly powerful force as far as college admissions are concerned.

In matters of education, most students do not prefer to take risks. They want to be sure about what they are getting into, not just from a monetary standpoint, but from a qualitative perspective. Doing a degree from a college with a ‘poor perception’ is not just a question about losing money, but also a question of wasting valuable years of one’s life.

3. Infrastructure

A course like B.Tech is not just another ‘run-of-the-mill’ course which is based on pure theoretical knowledge dispersion. B.Tech education needs to be backed by the presence of the right mix of facilities and faculties for the students to learn and learn well.

Many engineering colleges unfortunately have not grasped this concept and have continued to offer B.Tech without possessing the tools to do the same. The tragic part is all this is that most students at such colleges never realize what the true job of an engineer is. They end up having a misguided notion of what engineering as a discipline is meant to be.

When surveys later reveal stats such as ‘95% engineers in India are unemployable’, we feel surprised. The lack of infrastructure at colleges is a major reason behind this problem.

4. Affordability

How much is too much as far as a B.Tech is concerned? Most parents in India consider education as an investment in their child’s future and not as an outright expense. However, even an investment has to be made keeping in mind certain ground rules.

Before paying the first-semester fee at your given college, ask yourself these questions:

  1. Is the college worth spending money one?
  2. Will you be able to get a better college in my current scenario?
  3. Are the facilities being offered in sync with the high fee demanded?
  4. Is this your only option?

If you answer these questions honestly without bias, you will know what to do.

Galgotias University, Greater Noida

We start off with a fairly popular university in the Delhi-NCR region, Galgotias University.

Galgotias University

Galgotias University is one of the most popular names in Greater Noida for B.Tech

Galgotias has been around for a fairly sizable proportion of time. Established in 2011 by the Smt. Shankutla Educational & Welfare Society, Galgotias University came into existence at a time when engineering as a field of study was at its peak in terms of popularity (mostly down to the IT sector).

In the following years, Galgotias has expanded to a number of other disciplines such as management, arts, law, computer applications, commerce, and pharma.

Galgotias University is accredited and approved by AICTE and UGC respectively. B.Tech admissions to the university are offered on the basis of performance in Galgotia Engineering Entrance Exam (GEEE), an exam conducted by the university itself.

Galgotia University Academics

Galgotia University’s academic structure is divided into various constituent schools, with each one representing a different field of study. These different schools have been listed below.
