About College

Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) is one of the leading medical institutions of India. It was established on 1^st of January, 1823 as "Ecole de Médicine de Pondichéry" as a medical school by the French imperial government in India to train French citizens. In 1956, the Government of India took over administration of Pondicherry from the French and changed its name to “Dhanvantri Medical College". After the death of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru in 1964, it was rechristened to "Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research". Presently the institution is unanimously known by the acronym JIPMER.

• In 2008, it was given the status of Institute of National Importance by an act of parliament.
• It imparts undergraduate, postgraduate and diploma degrees in the field of medical. All the degrees are approved by Medical Council of India.
• Admission to all these courses is done through an Entrance Examination conducted by JIPMER at various centers in India once a year.
• It has approx. 350 teaching staff & 2500 admin staff. It intakes approx. 140 undergraduates, 75 post graduates & 18 doctorial students every year.
• JIPMER is both an educational institute that offers undergraduate and postgraduate medical training and a working hospital that provides inexpensive medical care to patients. The hospital is tertiary care referral hospital that is under administrative control of Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India.
• JIPMER is a residential medical institution with its own campus spread over 195 acres. The campus is located in an urban locale of Puducherry (formerly Pondicherry) and is 170 kms by road from Chennai.

Academic Overview: JIPMER imparts Undergraduate, Postgraduate degrees with 28 academic departments and Super Specialty Medical Training through a working hospital (JIPMER Hospital), and a Nursing College, B.Sc. Nursing and Medical Lab Technology Courses and PG Degree Courses in 22 disciplines are offered. Except this Full-time Ph.D. Programs are available in eight disciplines. Departments at JIPMER comprises of Pre & Para Clinical, Surgical and Medical departments. There are also some advanced centers. Some of these centers and departments are-

Researches: The institute demeanors research keenly in public health, modern medicine, and medical education. A research body of the institute looks after the research happenings. The college organizes various workshops, conferences, seminars and training courses every year. The teaching staff and the students publish research papers frequently in national and international journals. JIPMER has setup various research committees for facilitating research. ​Infrastructure: The campus of JIPMER is stretched out over an area of 195 acres at beautiful hillock basically known as Gorimedu. The campus comprises of medical college, hostels, faculty, a branch of nationalized bank, two ATM’S, students, A Post office, playgrounds, sporting field& old & new hospital blocks. Here the hospital block is crowded while the residential section is quit & idyllic.

Hospital: JIMPER has a tertiary care referral Hospital. Hospital has all the facilities that are needed in a super speciality hospital. It has 1790 beds and 852 autopsies. Thousands of patients are daily admitted to the hospital and various investigations under the different departments of hospitals are done.

Events: The JIPMER organizes various events throughout the academic year. Some of them are academic and some are cultural, sports and extracurricular. Spandan is the main annual festival of the college.

• Spandan: It is the annual festival of JIPMER. It is organized for seven days in the month of August or September. It includes cultural events, sports events, literary events and entertainment shows. It witnesses thousands of students from all across the country participating in various events.

Ranking:

• It has been ranked at 4th by India Today in 2013.
• Outlook India has ranked it 4^th among Top Medical Colleges of India in 2012.
