About College

Arul Anandar College is one of the best college of arts and science in Madurai.It is affiliated to, Madurai Kamraj University , accredited by NAAC in 2001 and reaccredited by NAAC with A grade with a CGPA of 3.52. in 2008. It offers variety of courses of undergraduate, postgraduate and doctorate

Over view of the college :

  • AAC was established in 1970 and named after St.John de Brito, the Jesuit saint martyred at Oriyur, Tamil Nadu
  • Economics and philosophy were introduced in 1970. Also undergraduate courses in mathematics (1971) Rural Development Science (1973), Chemistry (1979) and History (1980) and postgraduate courses in RDS (1980), Economics (1984) and Philosophy (1986) were introduced
  • In 2005 M.Sc. in Mathematics, Physics (SFC), Applied Psychology and Career Oriented Courses (COC) and in 2006 PGDCA was introduced
  • The college became a Jesuit institution in 1972, the youngest autonomous college in 1987 and a co-educational Institution in 2001
  • The Alumni Association (1987), Parent-Teacher Association (1995) and Mr.A.Michael Raj Teacher Stadium & Logistics Centre (2009) were inaugurated
  • In 2009 Women´s Studies Centre and Women´s Hostel in 2010 were established
  • Internet Connectivity extended during 2009-2010 and Browsing Centre was established in 2010-2011

During the academic year 2012-2013:

  • Department of Physics has been recognized as Research Centre by Madurai Kamaraj University
  • B.Sc. Food Science & Technology was introduced
  • IOB branch and Day Care Centre were started
  • Grotto and indoor Stadium & Gymnasium were constructed
  • Bio-Gas Plant from human waste in hostel and three Phase Electricity Power Supply in campus were introduced
  • A model poultry and piggery farm was established

Some of the aims of college are:

  • To empower rural students through effective and innovative education
  • To promote human rights founded on dignity‚ equity and justice
  • To provide facilities for academic growth and training in professional skills and placement
  • To build AAC into a policy advocacy centre

Library: 

In 1970 , the college facilitate library with aim of providing students higher educational support and it started with a volume of 1500. Every year  library increase its annual purchase by 2000 books, now the total volume touched 54000 books.

  • As an average at about 452 students visit the library everyday
  • Each students or reader refers minimum of 3 and a maximum of 5 documents per day

Cells of the college:

There are various cells in college for developmental activities in college and society

RADAR (Rural Action, Development and Research)

It involves individuals and groups in the task of creating a humane society based on the tenets of the Constitution of India through participatory Research by students and staff with the rural community and periodical social and community orientation

ACPR (Arrupe Centre for Policy Research)

It was established in 2007 with the aim of providing learning among farmers and academic support for Research and Policy formulation.

CCRG (Computer Course for Rural Girls)

It aims at economic empowerment through skill development and educational process and reduction of female infanticide.

ARISE( Arulanandar College Initiative for Social Education)

AAC creates a sense of Social concern in the minds of all the students, through direct contact and exposure to our rural community and to lead the educated to committed action, dedicated service to the poor.

CWS(Centre for Women’ studies)

It creates awareness to the students and local women on various issues pertaining to women and gender

NCC(National Cadet Corps)

It aims at grooming the youth of the country and provide basic military training to the students to develop leadership , sportmenship and secular outlook.

NSS(National Service Scheme)

It includes development of the personality of students through creative and constructive social action.
