About College

IIT Madras is one among the Institutes of National Importance recognized by the Government of India. It was the third Indian Institute of Technology that was established through an act of parliament. The institute was inaugurated in 1959 by Prof. Humayun Kabir, the then Union Minister for Scientific Research and Cultural Affairs.

  • The campus is located 10 km from Chennai Airport and 12 km from Chennai Central Railway Station.
  • IIT Madras is a residential institute with nearly 550 faculty, 8000 students, and 1250 administrative & supporting staff and is a self-contained campus located in a land of about 250 hectares.
  • The Institute has sixteen academic departments and a few advanced research centers in various disciplines of engineering and pure sciences, with nearly 100 laboratories organized in a unique pattern of functioning.
  • There is an International and Alumni Relations Student Council that works with the Office of International and Alumni Relations.
  • To improve the quality of higher education in India, IIT Madras has come up with an initiative called NPTEL (National Program on Technology Enhanced Learning) in the year 1999.

Academics: IIT Madras offers undergraduate, postgraduate and research degrees across 15 disciplines in Engineering, Science, Management, and Humanities. The institute has 16 academic departments-

Research Park:

IIT Madras has a Research Park nearby to campus on an area of 11 acres. Research park focuses on incubation efforts and propelling innovation in R & D focused companies.

Extracurricular: Apart from setting up the best academic standards, IIT. Madras is well known for its extracurricular achievements. The college lays emphasis on nurturing the essence of other activities for the overall development of students. Students join varied hobby clubs on the campus. They are-

Facilities:

 Hostels 

 

There are 18 independent hostels inside the campus. The hostels are named after the principal rivers of India and the campus dining facilities are named after mountains. Such as-

Boys’ Hostels- Alaknanda, Ganga, Godavari, Narmada

Girls’ Hostels- Saryu, Sabarmati

 

Central Library 

 

There are about 2 million books that cover all the disciplines of engineering, science, technology, humanities, and social sciences.

  • There are documents kept preserved like reports, standards, theses, books, patents, journal back volumes, and atlases.
  • In the non-book collection, there are audio and video cassettes, micro fiche or film, and of course CD ROM discs. There is a ‘Book Bank’ facility also. There are about 1,000 journals (scholarly journals) in the field of engineering, sciences, and humanities.
  • The institute subscribes to 32 e-books.
  • It has been accredited with 9001:2008 quality standards by TUV Nord of Germany.

Computer Centre

The computer center was set up with the aim to provided a computational atmosphere and conduction various researches

NPTEL 

National Program on Technology Enhanced Learning (NPTEL) has been set up with the collaboration with the Indian Institutes of Technology and the Indian Institute of Science that is funded by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India. Various web courses (129) were developed in the first phase. 110 courses are there in the video format.

Medical Facilities 

There are a clinical lab, a dispensary, and an operation theatre that is providing medical care.

Sports and Recreation 

There are facilities for playing football, cricket, tennis, and hockey. Inter-IIT sports meets are held.

Festivals:

  • Shaashtra: Shaastra is the annual technical festival of IIT Madras. It is typically held in the second week of January and is the first ISO 9001:2000 certified student festival in the world.
  • Saarang: Saarang is the annual social and cultural festival of IIT Madras. It is a five-day-long event held towards the end of January every year.
