About College

National Law Institute University (NLIU) is a law school and center for research located in Bhopal, India. Established in 1997 by the State of Madhya Pradesh, it is one of the first three law schools to have been established under the National Law School system. Since its establishment, NLIU has consistently been rated among the three best law schools in India. The University launched its first academic program in 1998, with eminent Indian jurist Prof. V.S. Rekhi, as the Director.

  • Recognized by the Bar Council of India, the university admits 100 undergraduates each year through the Common Law Admission Test, who complete 15 trimesters before being awarded a combined B.A., LL.B (Hons.) degree
  • The post-graduate course offered at the university is the LL.M. degree
  • The University is a member of the Association of Indian Universities and the patron of the university is the Hon. Chief Justice of India
  • Since 2009, NLIU has been home to the Rajiv Gandhi National Cyber Law Center, established by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India

Infrastructure:

  • The NLIU campus is situated on the side of a hillock near Kerwa Lake on the Kerwa Dam Road, Bhadbhada in the city of Bhopal.
  •  The new campus complex has been designed to keep the environmental impact on the land to a minimum thereby creating a blend of natural landscape and modern architecture, including the Academic Block, the Auditorium and the Gyan Mandir - which houses the Library, The Comp Lab, Faculty Rooms, Debating Halls and classrooms.
  • The university's sports facilities include a sports complex which houses a gym, facilities for table tennis, badminton, tennis, pool, other indoor games, two basketball courts, fields for volleyball and football.
  •  The hostels provide double rooms for the First years and single rooms from the Second through the Fifth year.
  • The Nescafe outlet and the 'Collage' Canteen on the campus are the favorite haunts of the students during breaks and evenings. Rajiv Gandhi National Cyber Law Centre is the first of its kind established inside the NLIU campus.

Research and collaborations:

The universities have collaboration at both national and international levels. Its collaborations include:

  • World Bank Projects on environment building and capacity building
  • National Research projects which have been taken up by the university include the Ministry of science and technology
  • NLIU’s collaboration with IIIT on Cyber Law and Jurisprudence

Extra-curricular activities:

The students take part in extra-curricular activities. There are various student activity cells

  • Moot Court Association(MCA)- It is the mooting and client-counseling society at the university. It was established in 2002 to encourage the students in the field of mooting and counseling.
  • Centre for Business and Commercial Law(CBCL)- It was established in 2008. The main aim of this cell was to facilitate corporate awareness and providing an avenue for scholarship in commercial laws.
  • NLIU Law Review- It publishes material on subjects of interest to the legal profession and aims at encouraging the students and create scholarly writings of the highest quality.
  • Cell for Research in International Law(CRIL)- It researches in areas of International law and policies. It aims to encourage awareness and enthusiasm in the field of international law by organizing events such as round table conferences, panel discussions, and other awareness programs.
  • Athena- It is the cultural society with the aim to streamline cultural activities in the University by organizing events including the annual intra-University events Palchin and Rang Manch.
  • Aadrika- It is the cell for media and management, founded in the session 2012-13, at National Law Institute University, Bhopal. It aims at establishing a discussion forum for all likeminded people, creating an information network for the students that bring all the important and relevant news to their phones and emails and to increase awareness and be a platform for research in the field of media law, with all the social media guidelines, privacy litigations, and much more recent issue.

  • The library of the college is its heart and soul and it is fully air-conditioned
  • There is a collection of a very rich number of books in the library
  • A large collection of e-resources like Lexis Nexis, Hein Online, JSTOR, Manupatra, AIR, SCC, etc

Computer Centre:

  • The university maintains the state of the art computer lab replete with the latest genre of computers and internet facilities
  • A high-speed wireless fidelity network provides students with internet access throughout the campus

      The National Law Institute University has a well established Placement Coordination Committee which has been taking care of recruitiments. For those willing for work with corporate houses and law firms, a number of employers visit the campus during the placement drive and offer opportunities, though students manage to get PPOs in large numbers during their internships as well. For those inclined in litigation NLIU is an established brand name being in the top 3 law schools in the country. Many students also opt for social sector.

      In my batch the Placement was around 80% in 2015. Many students were placed in Big 4 consulting firm. Internship opportunities are good and students were pre selected by the companies before completing the course.
