About College

Kannada University was established in the year 1991 by the Karnataka Government through the Kannada University Act, 1991 after long years of agitation and continuous demands

  • The University has three main wing including Adalitanga (Administrative wing), Adhyayananga (Academic wing) and Prasaranga (Publication wing)
  • The university has a splendid location in the Hampi area of Karnataka which holds a historical significance
  • It was located in the Stone mantapas of hampi from where it moved to its new campus “Vidyaranya” in 1994
  • The university also takes pride in having two more satellite campuses situated on Badami and Kuppalli
  • It has a unique feature in that it has named each block in its campus with historically meaningful names like “Vidyaranya” for the entire campus, “Akshara” for the library building, and “Kriyashakthi” for the administrative building and so on
  • The chief objective of   the university (KU) is to perform inter and multidisciplinary research on the diverse areas of Kannada and Karnataka
  • The University confers "Nadoja" awards, every year, to eminent personalities for their contribution in various fields
  • It is also probably India’s first and only university to have dedicated a major part of its campus for the department of tribal studies that focuses on the tribal issues and history and the university boasts of a Tribal Village even known as “Girisime”
  • The “Girisme” village has hut-like structures where the students are given the chance to literally feel the life and essence of the tribes of Karnataka

Departments:

There a numerous departments in the university that are known for their outstanding teaching staff and research works. A few of these are:

Department of Manuscriptology

The department collects manuscripts of all kinds and preserves them so that they could be studied to know about the past.

Department of Ancient History and Archaeology

Since the time of its inception the department has been bringing about the programs that it was initially built for and it is remarkably doing so by   emphasizing more on the history, archaeology and culture studies of Karnataka.

Department of Sculpture and Paintings

The department students have carried out many Art Exhibitions throughout the state of Karnataka and have also brought glory to the department as also to the university.

Department of Tribal Studies

The department is focused mostly on the research works of the tribal life of Karnataka. The department is sheltered in a mini-campus having hut-like structures displaying the life of the tribes.

 

Research:

The major research works and individual projects that have been done are:

  • Professional Compilation of Glossaries
  • Editing of Tribal and Folk Epics
  •  Survey of Publication of Inscriptions
  •  Compilation of Temple Encyclopedias
  • Preparation of Catalogues of Manuscripts
  • History of Minor Dynasties

Facilities:

Library

There are two very well equipped libraries in the university with the names “Akshara” and “Sarvagna” which is aided by the UGC. The “Sarvagna” library is specifically built for the dissemination and also collection of Karnataka studies and books.

Auditorium

There are two auditoriums in the university campus- one indoor and another open-air each being named as “BhuvanaVijaya’ and “Navaranga” respectively.
