About College

Queen Mary's College is an autonomous government college located in Chennai and was founded in July, 1914 as the first college in the city solely for women. It also claims to fall in the list of first three women colleges in the country. It was started as Madras Women’s College with a capacity of 33 students in a building known as Capper house.

College gained its present name in 1917 and permanent status a year later. The college celebrated its Diamond Jubilee with full pomp and vigour in the presence of late PM Mrs. Indira Gandhi. It has been running successfully for more than 100 years and has commemorated each achievement with a building for expanding its education facilities.
