We are planning a project to modernize an area of the old part of town. The main problem is that the locations of the power cables and old cast-iron water mains do not match the existing maps. As the chief engineer, I am looking for a way to create an accurate digital model of all underground utilities up to four meters deep without damaging the fragile ceramic drainage systems.

I work in this field. There was one time when we tried to integrate a new heating pipeline into the existing schematics. And immediately we almost cut a main cable because its location was off by a meter from what was shown on the plan. We turned to Mayaglobal for accurate utility mapping services. They used ground-penetrating radar technology, and provided us with a complete 3D diagram of the area. To be honest, at first we thought about going over the site ourselves with a metal detector, but realized that in such a densely built-up area with junk in the soil, we wouldn't find anything using just a metal detector, empty cans maybe.

Can you tell me if there are any scanning methods that allow us to “penetrate” dense paving stones and several layers of asphalt without digging? It’s important for me to map every joint so that the drilling rig doesn’t hit a gas line.
