About College

The PHFI Institute of Public Health Sciences, Hyderabad (formerly the Indian Institute of Public Health – Hyderabad), is the academic arm of the Public Health Foundation of India (PHFI), a distinguished not-for-profit public-private initiative working towards a healthier India. Established in response to India's growing public health institutional needs, PHFI was enabled by the Government of India in 2006 to strengthen training, research, and policy development in public health.

In a landmark recognition of its academic excellence, the Ministry of Education, on the advice of the UGC, declared the PHFI Institute of Public Health Sciences, Hyderabad—along with its constituent units at Bengaluru and Bhubaneswar—as an Institution Deemed to be University under a distinct category, vide Notification dated 17th June 2025. This prestigious recognition places the institute among India's premier public health institutions.

The institute is governed by the Institute of Public Health Sciences Hyderabad Society, comprising leading experts from academia, industry, and public health. The leadership includes distinguished figures such as Srini Raju (Chairman, IPHS Society), G V Prasad (Co-chairman and MD, Dr. Reddy's Laboratories), and Prof. K. Srinath Reddy (President, PHFI), among others.

PHFI has been ranked 2nd among the Schools of Public Health globally by the Public Health Academic Ranking (PHAR) published in March 2024, ahead of Harvard's T.H. Chan School of Public Health and Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Additionally, PHFI stands first in the overall research category and second in the health sector research category among all institutions in India, according to the SCIMAGO Institutional Ranking.

College Infrastructure and Facility

The institute is situated on a sprawling 43-acre permanent campus in Rajendra Nagar, Hyderabad, which became fully operational from September 2022, providing students with a world-class learning environment.

Academic Block 1, a 17,000 sq. ft. state-of-the-art facility inaugurated by Telangana's Finance and Health Minister, features:

  • 5 spacious classrooms with a combined capacity of approximately 450 students, designed for interactive and collaborative learning

  • 1 fully equipped computer lab with 30 high-performance systems

  • A well-stocked library with extensive collections of public health literature, journals, and digital resources

  • Administration and dedicated research areas to support academic and scholarly activities

In addition to the Academic Block, the campus houses specialized facilities including Health Technologies and Disability Labs, which have been operational since October 2021, providing hands-on training opportunities for students. The institute has been identified by an Empowered Committee as a greenfield institution qualifying for Institution of Eminence status, reflecting its commitment to world-class infrastructure and academic standards.

The institute's infrastructure is designed to support its mission of advancing public health through high-quality education, research, and policy support, working closely with government bodies and stakeholders to address pressing public health challenges in India.


Faculty and Department

The PHFI Institute of Public Health Sciences, Hyderabad, is endowed with internationally trained and experienced faculty across various public health disciplines. The academic leadership is spearheaded by distinguished professionals who bring decades of experience in public health education, research, and policy.

Key Academic Leadership:

  • Prof. Himanshu Negandhi – Director, Academics, PHFI: A medical doctor with postgraduate training in Community Medicine and a Master's in Clinical Epidemiology from the University of Sydney. With over 20 years of rich experience, Prof. Negandhi has made significant contributions to public health education and research in India.

  • Prof. Sanjay P. Zodpey – Vice President, Academics & Research, PHFI: An eminent public health academician with over 30 years of experience, Prof. Zodpey is renowned for his extensive research contributions and leadership in building public health capacity across India. He has been instrumental in shaping public health education and research frameworks at the national level.

  • Prof. K. Srinath Reddy – President, PHFI: A globally respected public health leader and cardiologist, Prof. Reddy has been a pivotal figure in public health policy and research in India for over four decades. His contributions to non-communicable disease prevention and health policy have earned him international recognition.

  • Dr. Chandrakant Lahariya – Senior Public Health Specialist: A medical doctor with a Master's in Public Health from the University of Sydney and over 15 years of experience, Dr. Lahariya has been actively involved in health policy, program implementation, and research across various domains of public health.

Faculty Expertise: The institute's faculty members are experts across diverse public health domains including Epidemiology, Biostatistics, Health Policy and Financing, Health Systems Management, Reproductive and Child Health, Nutrition, Environmental Health, Non-Communicable Diseases, and Infectious Disease Control. Many faculty members serve on national and international advisory committees and contribute to WHO, Government of India, and state government health initiatives.
