About College

Acharya Girish Chandra Bose College was established on October 4, 1965 with the aim of providing higher education to the students. The college is affiliated to University of Calcutta. It was approved by NAAC with B grade in 2011. The college offers Bachelor Degree programme in the field of Commerce and Arts

Some of the facts related to the college are:

  • Earlier, the college was known as Bangabasi College of Commerce
  • Late Acharya Girish Chandra Bose, the eminent educationist and great Social Reformer, was the founder of Bangabasi College. He established the institutions - 'Bangabasi School' (1885 AD.) and 'Bangabasi College' (1887 AD.)
  • Bangabasi College of Commerce started functioning as an Evening College in the Bangabasi College School building with B.Com(Pass) at 8/1 St. James Square, Calcutta-12 
  • In 1970-71, the college introduced B.Com (Hons) course
  • In 2005-06, the college started Arts Stream  by introducing B.A.(Hons) in Bengali & English
  • The college Logo was introduced in 2004. The present Logo of the College (Fifth) is a modification of the Fourth Logo. The Golden Jubilee(1964-2014) Logo was introduced on 7th October, 2013
  • College receives financial support from the state government and UGC

Library

The college has well equipped library with:

  • 25114 text and reference books and 8 journals
  • 14 Multimedia literature
  • Library services are computerized and LIBSYS installed
  • Seating capacity of 80 students

Computer Centre

There are well furnished computer labs with:

  • 25 computers
  • 12 LAN Terminals
  • Internet connectivity with Broad Band 256 kbps.

 

Extra Curricular:

  • Sports- College facilitate Indoor and outdoor games for physical development of the students
  • Publication of Magazine, holding of debate, recitation, music competitions, educational excursions and other cultural functions are mostly under the control of the College Union run on a selective basis with full membership rights for every Bonafied student
  • NSS-The College has started a National Service Scheme (NSS) Unit under the University of Calcutta in which an Advisory Committee with the staff and students was constituted. Various social activities like survey of slum areas, setting up of medical centres, sanitation drives, adult education programmes for the weaker sections of the community, organising blood donation camp, campaigning for eradication of social evils are organised. The scheme will help the students to develop a sense of social and civic responsibility. They will also be awarded certificates of honour which will brighten their future prospects.

  Scholarships:

  • Loan Scholarships to the poor but meritorious students, Stipends to the S.C. & S.T. students, tuition-fee concessions and grants from Students' Aid Fund are available to the students of slender means
  • Students in need of financial assistance are to apply to the Principal in the prescribed form to be had from the college-office
  • The student seeking concessions and grants must be a regular student
  • Bonafied students of the college are entitled to travel at concessional rates
