About College

Indian Law Society's Law College (ILS Law College), Pune is one of the most popular Law institutes in the country. ILS Law College was established as a Public Charitable Trust on 4th March 1923. It is one of the first colleges in the country to begin legal education in its true wisdom. The college was affiliated to the University of Bombay (From 1924 – 1949). Since 1949 the college is affiliated to the University of Pune.

Infrastructure:

  • The campus of ILS is locted at the centre of law college road between the FTII and bhandarkar research institute
  • The Building also called as saraswati building has library, reading room , the administrative office and conference halls
  • Apart from these buildings there is a hostel, gymnasium, cricket and football grounds, tennis court

Reservation of seats:

  • 50 % seats are reserved for candidates of SC, SBC, ST, NT, VJNT and OBC categories according to rules in force. Only candidates from Maharashtra can seek admissions against these seats
  • 3 % seats are reserved according to law for physically handicapped candidates. Candidates from any State can seek admissions against these seats
  • 47 % seats are available for others. These are divided among candidates from within Maharashtra and candidates from outside Maharashtra

Collaboration and projects:

  • Grand Challenges Canada- This project aims at reducing distress and improving access to mental healthcare through community-based self-help groups and farmers' clubs in rural Maharashtra state
  • VU University Amsterdam, Netherland- The college is in collaboration with VU university. It aims to foster long term research linkages between Netherlands and India in human rights and health
  • World Health Organisation- ILS collaborates with WHO and also conducts an International Diploma in Mental Health Law & Human Rights every year
  • VU University (Amsterdam, Netherlands), TISS (Mumbai), BALM (Chennai)- Contributes to the development of various trans-disciplinary research projects related to public health and law, medicine and mental health; sensitize health care professionals, law professionals and NGOs by conducting training programs on mental health legal and policy issues

Women’s Study centre:

  • Women's Studies Centre granted by the UGC was established on 1st April 2012
  • It strives for realization of the goal of 'Gender Justice' by mobilizing efforts for promoting equality and women's human rights
  •  It upholds goals enshrined in the Constitution of India and accepts international human rights instruments for realizing women's rights as human rights

Extra-curricular activities:

Legal Aid Programme-

  • This Prgoramme was started in 1976. It received grants from CILAS, UGC, state of Maharashtra and ford foundation
  • The Legal Aid Centre works under the guidance of a teacher-in-charge who is assisted by other full time faculty members

Facilities:

Hostel:

  • The college has seprate hostel for boys and girls
  • Hostel has totel of 117 rooms
  • The girls hostel can accommodate 144 students
  • Hostel is equipped with all the modern facilities

Library:

  • ILS library has more than 45000 books
  • It subscribes to over 95 Indian and foreign journals each year
  • The library has an inter-library loan network with the other prominent libraries in Pune

Sports:

  • There is a gymnasium in the college that can accommodate 250-300 people and has all the equipments
  • There is a swimming pool in the college which is open for about 10 months in a year
  • There are playgrounds available for different sports like cricket, football, volley ball etc

Banking:

The rupee co-operative bank has an extension counter in ILS campus

Scholarships and Awards:

Central government scholarships-

  • Scholarships to students of backward classes- Students belonging to certain backward classes, viz. nomadic tribes, scheduled caste, scheduled tribes, and notified tribes (vimukta jaati) whose annual family income does not exceed Rs 60,000 receive from the Central Government tuition fees, other fees, and examination fees, and a maintenance allowance of Rs 190-205 p.m. These students do not have to pay fees at the time of admission
  • Freeships to students of backward classes: Students belonging to backward classes receive from the central government tuition fees, examination fees and other fees. There is no restriction regarding family income
  • National Merit Scholarship: Students who have obtained more than 60 % marks in the qualifying exam (XIIth or Degree exam as the case may be) and whose annual parental income does not exceed Rs 1 lac, receive this scholarship of Rs 100-120 p.m. Students who do not satisfy the income criterion receive a certificate of merit

State Government Scholarships:

  • Government Open Merit Scholarship: Students who have obtained more than 60% marks in the qualifying exam (XIIth or Degree exam as the case may be), whose annual parental income does not exceed Rs 1 lac, and who do not receive any other concession, receive this scholarship of Rs 30-50 p.m.
  • Primary Teachers' Concession: A concession by way of refund of tuition fees, examination fees, library fees and gymkhana fees is given by the government to children of teachers serving in recognized primary schools.
  • Secondary Teachers' Concession: A concession by way of refund of tuition fees, examination fees, library fees and gymkhana fees is given by the government to children of teachers serving in recognized secondary schools (from 5th std to XIIth std).
  • Freedom Fighters' Concession: A concession by way of refund of tuition fees, examination fees, library fees and gymkhana fees is given by the government to children of certified freedom fighters
