About College

Gargi College is one of the leading Women's colleges located on the south campus. It was founded in 1967 & was named after an enlightened woman Gargi (Believing in the Brihadaranyaka Upanishada of the Vedic Age). It is affiliated with Delhi University & has got the award of “College with Potential for Excellence” by UGC in 2004.

  • It has enrolled around 3000 students till now & believes in creating wholly developed professionals symbolizing the spirit of enterprise.
  • It features lush green lawns which makes it an ideal place for getting a quality education
  • The college campus is fully Wi-Fi & has well-equipped lecture halls & laboratories. Additionally, a state of art auditorium& seminar hall is available which can accommodate around 750 & 150 students respectively
  • It imparts Undergraduate & Postgraduate courses
  • It is the only women institute on south campus that offers education in 4 streams (Commerce & Arts, Sciences & a teacher training course in elementary education
  • The college has around 180 faculty members & most of them hold a doctorate degree
  • Faculty members & students of the college have published numerous papers in national & International journals
  • It offers excellent job placements & every year reputed recruiters via top MNC’s, Insurance companies & Event Management companies hire talented students of the college

Extracurricular Activities:

The college believes in enhancing the overall personality of students. So, provides professional training to the students for various games, dances & Music. The students of the college have been selected for representing DU in state & national tournaments like

  • Basketball
  • Volleyball
  • Taekwondo
  • Tennis

In 2012, Gargi students received the chess champion award & the Judo team received the runner-up award. In 2013, the College won the gold medal in athletics and Judo and emerged second in tennis tournaments of DU. Apart from sports, the other activities in which students take initiative to perform are:

Social Outreach Programmes: The NSS, NCC, Equal Opportunity Cell, and Women’s Development Centers of the College arrange events that sensitize our students to gender, economic and other issues. These create awareness about social responsibility and provide the opportunity for rendering service to society.

Self-Development Programmes: The College has an active Photography club, Film Appreciation club, Eco club among others. Our students produce about 10 quarterly/annual newsletters from diverse Departments and an annual magazine.

Students Achievement

Initiated last year, one each for Humanities, Sciences, and Commerce, it has instilled heart-warming enthusiasm in students to interrogate their environment and present new experiments and ideas.  Some of the winners for 2009-10 are:                         

  • Ritika, Upasna, and Neha (Arts stream) presented “Begging: The Popular StreetCulture in India”.
  • Megha Bahl and Preeti Mann( Commerce stream) presented – “A Study of Impact of Socio-Economic Factors on a Student's Decision to Pursue Higher Education”

Ranking

The college has received the Star College Grant & grant award for establishing a bioinformatics stream by the Ministry of Science & Technology, Government of India in 2009.
