About College

National Research Centre for Orchids (NRCO) situate at Pakyong, Sikkim was established by Indian Council for Agricultural Research (ICAR) during the 8th five year plan based on the recommendations of the Planning Commission keeping in the view of the export potential of Orchids. The college was inaugurated by the Director of the ICAR. Since its inception the centre is undertaking mission oriented research programme on crop improvement, production and harvest management.

  • Divisions/ Units of the Centre: The NRCO has a Darjeeling Centre built over 400 sq. m. created for protected cultivation of orchids and conservation of Germplasm. A laboratory at the centre have collected over 160 species of Orchids.
  • Ongoing Research and Projects: Various projects and research works are going on in the centre some of them are Internally funded like “DNA fingerprinting of Commercially important orchids”, “Post harvest technology of Orchids”, “Stress Physiology of Orchids” etc and some are externally funded like “DUS Testing Project”, “DBT Project”, “NAIP Project” & “Horticulture Mission for North East & Himalayan States (HMNEH)”.
  • Services provided by the NRCO: NCRO provides several services like Providing technical support to private sector laboratories for multiplication and expansion of Orchids, Evaluation of floriculture related research projects.
