About College

Film and Television Institute of India – Pune is a premier film & television institute founded in 1960. The institute started running its courses actually in 1961. In the beginning, the training session was functioning in New Delhi but after sometime around 1974, it shifted to Pune. Afterward, the institute became fully assisted by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Government of India.

Ambika Soni (Information & Broadcasting Minister) in 2011 passed a bill to make FTII as a “Centre of excellence” so enabled institute to enjoy the privileges & Academic status of a University.

The institute offers various Post graduate courses in the field of direction, media & editing.

FTII is a member of an organization CILECT which is an association of film school.

Some attractive key points from which you should go through at least once:

  • From the Inspection in 1960, it became the premier college with the biggest & noticeable alumni’s like Dharmendra deol & Jai Narain, both are the directors of Film & Television Institute of India.
  • Ritwik Ghatak & Jethu Mandal are the two main excellent faculty members of this college.

Infrastructure & other facilities

The FTII is a structured & well equipped institute with all modern equipment’s. The college comprises of two Film studio floors with the dimensions of 175ft X 80 ft and 97 ft X 51 ft. It has 4 Nos. of 16 mm cameras& 35 mm cameras for film shootings & video cameras from low to high end digital models.

 It has provided film & video editing facilities from the low end to high end. Additionally, the sound department of institute has sufficient number of nagras, an exclusive Sound studio doubling with rock n roll projection facilities. Recently it has also attained the Harrison audio mixing console too.

It has two television studios with the dimensions of 60 ft X 40 ft X 22 ft and 50 ft X 40 ft X 22 ft. The studios are form fitted with the mechanical lighting systems & follow spots.

Multimedia Laboratory:

The college has provided a well-equipped computer laboratory with all latest software’s so that students can easily learn about multimedia in practical manners.

Screenings:

The daily screening is a very important & unique part of student life at the college. A collection of contemporary & classics national & international films are shown to students every evening in main theatre of college. The students are to watch the films of their choice.

 

 

The college offers three year Post graduate diploma courses in editing, film direction, cinematography & audiography and various 2 years & one year courses. Few of the courses having total of 12 seats are:

  • Three Year Post Graduate Diploma in Direction
  • Three Year Post Graduate Diploma in Editing          
  • Three Year Post Graduate Diploma in Sound Recording and Sound Design           
  • Two Year Post Graduate Diploma in Art Direction and Production Design
  • Two Year Post Graduate Diploma in Acting
  • Three Year Post Graduate Diploma in Cinematography
  • One Year Post Graduate Certificate Course in Feature Film Screenplay Writing

The FTII students are very creative & have shown their creativity in various events organized by other colleges. Its students have won number of awards in numerous events held up in India & abroad.

Recently FTII has won

  • 17 national awards
  • 01 international award for their films

The college has provided separate hostel facility to boys & girls with all modern services. The students have to pay hostel fee at the starting of academic year.

Book, Film and Video Library:

The FTII library houses a large variety books related to theatre, television, film, arts and literature and has sizeable collection of videos & films. It has large number of media related periodicals & journals & also enabled the access to collection of national film archive of India near to its campus.

Sports and Games Facilities:

The FTII also make sure of providing a variety of opportunities to the students so that they can engage themselves in games and sports. The college has provided the facility of a swimming pool, a Gym and a playing field. It also organizes one-day cricket match every year between the students and the Alumni of the FTII.

  • In 2012, the 3rd year film direction course student Renu Savant was awarded for the Best FTII Student for Pune International Film Festival (PIFF).
  • In 2012, the Sound Recordist Shankarnama - Nikhil Mullay was awarded for the Best Sound for Whistling Woods International Student Film Competition (a section of the Pune International Film Festival (PIFF).
  • In the same year, Open Cafe v2.5 - Sylvester Fonseca, Cinematographer was awarded for the Best Cinematography for Whistling Woods International Student Film Competition (a section of the Pune International Film Festival (PIFF) 2012
  • In 2011, the student Prantik Narayan Basu received the Technical Awards in Camera Gold and Sound Silver 4th Cut “In Students” Video Festival, Mumbai 2011

The institute offers restricted number of scholarships to deserving candidates in all courses. Some scholarships are awarded at the beginning of the academic year on the basis of school percentage and afterward on the basis of final exams & practical. Few of scholarships given are:

  • Kamalakar Vinayak Karthanis scholarship: it is given to the students who rank 1st & 2nd in final diploma exam (Rs. 3000 & 5000).
  • Phalake Memorial Honour' scholarship: Given to the two best students in final diploma exam (2,500 & 1,500)
  • Baburao Patel Scholarship': Given to the meritorious students in final diploma exams with (5,000)
