About College

Presidency University is a public state university of Kolkata that was established in 1817 by  Raja Ram Mohan Roy, Radhakanta Deb, David Hare, Justice Sir Edward Hyde East, Baidyanath Mukhopadhya and Rasamay Dutt. One of the 1st institutes of Asia for western-type higher education was formerly known as the Hindoo College and then Presidency College. In 2010, it became an autonomous university and was named as the Presidency University since then.
The campus of the Presidency University is in College Street of Kolkata.

  • “Biochemical characterization of SarA and SarR regulators in S. aureus to study molecular genetics” DBT, Govt. of India, 2014-2016. (PI: Prof Adhar C Manna. Rs. 50,00,000).
  • “Understanding mechanism of oxidative stress responses by studying catalase regulation in S. aureus”. BRNS, Department of Atomic Energy, 2014-2016. ( PI: Prof. Adhar C Manna. Rs. 26,64,750).
  • Studies on enhancing biological control mechanism of aquatic weed, water hyacinth through integration of insects and fungal agents. ( DST under SERB- OYS Scheme). PI: Dr Puja Ray.
  • Molecular dissection of polyamine mediated hyper-osmotic stress tolerance in cultivars of indica rice (DBT, Govt. of India, RGYI-Grant); 2013-2016. PI: Dr. Bhaskar Gupta, Co-PIs: Dr. Kamala Gupta and Dr. Arijit Bhattacharya (Tripura University, Tripura).
  • Culture dependent and independent analyses of prokaryotic communities from the burrows, casts, and guts of earthworms from in and around Kolkata (West Bengal Biodiversity Board, Govt. of West Bengal; 2012-2015. PI: Dr. Bhaskar Gupta, Co-PI: Souryadeep Mukherjee.

Facilities:

  • It is one of the largest and oldest research higher education libraries of Kolkata city with about 3, 73, 422 books and 1, 52, 425 periodicals.
  • E-classroom with video-conferencing facility.
  • Cafeteria named as 86 is run by the Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation.
  • Hostel facility that can accommodate 274 undergraduate and postgraduate students.
  • Presidency College Karmi Sanskritik Sangstha.
  • The Presidency College Cooperative Society.

Extra-Curricular Activities:
Students' Union: The Students' Union room is located behind main building. The Union has been active since the first half of the 20th century. It is run by a President and a General Secretary.
Sports: Until the mid-1950s the college used to have a lawn tennis court to the west of the premises, which was later replaced by the new building housing the economics, political science and sociology departments as well the college's auditorium, Derozio Hall. Until the mid-20th century the college's sporting facilities were managed and maintained by a Sports Secretary elected from the student body. 

National Service Scheme (NSS)
Sports Cell: In sports cell, the university provides equipments of almost all kinds of indoor and outdoor games for the students; so that students can do some exercise and fresh their minds at their off time.
Cultural Cell: In the cultural cell music dance and drama are included largely.At the time of university social or any other competitions, Cultural Cell takes leading role in participating into them. Same thing happens for sports cell also.

Scholarships:

  • A limited number of Merit-cum-means scholarships are available for the deserving and meritorious students whose parents or guardian’s monthly income does not exceed Rs. 25,000/- per annum.
  • A limited number of Sheela Kanoria Foundation Scholarships of Rs. 2000/- per month are available for female students. A limited number of Happy Calcuttans Scholarships of the value Rs. 800/- are available for the undergraduate students.

      Pass 10+2 with 80% in aggregate (with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics) and 80% in Chemistry & an Entrence Test to be passed.

      The Board Presidency University will conduct common entrance examinations for admission to three year B.A. /B.Sc. (Honours) course (PUBDET) and two year M.A. / M.Sc. course (PUMDET) in the Presidency University. The medium of admission tests will be English except for vernacular subjects like Hindi and Bengali.
