About College

The Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IITB) is a public engineering institute located in Mumbai in state of Maharashtra. It is the second-oldest campus of the Indian Institute of Technology system. IIT Bombay is ranked globally among top universities of science & technology

  • It was established by an Act of Parliament in the year 1958. Planning got its wings in the year 1957 and the first batch of hundred students was given admission in 1958.
  • It has been approved by the AICTE and also recognized by the UGC. In the year 1961, the Institute was proclaimed as an institution which is having national importance.
  • IIT Bombay was set up with assistance from UNESCO and funds from the USSR Government. UNESCO provided equipment and technical experts mainly from the Soviet Union.
  • The UNESCO supplied with many fellowships (27 in number) so that the Indian faculty members could be given appropriate training in the USSR.

Academic Overview: IIT Bombay offers undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral degrees in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. There are 17 departments, 13 multi-disciplinary centers, and 3 schools of excellence inside the campus-

Facilities: There are various facilities that are provided in the Institute. They are as follows-

Residential Facilities 

There hostels at IITB have numbering system-

  1. Hostel No. 10 is for the under graduate and postgraduate students.
  2. The hostel with No. 11 is only for the postgraduate students and totally kept reserved for the girls.
  3. There is also a housing complex named Tansa House which is reserved for the ‘single male project staff’. Being the smallest hostel, it provides 128 rooms.
  4. The Tulsi House has been kept reserved for the research scholars only.

Computer Facilities 

There are mini computers and various work stations. CAD activity is there in Metallurgical Engineering and Chemical Engineering.

Library

The Library is very well equipped and has a rich collection of the following particulars-

  1. More than 2, 35,300 books, thesis, videos, and CDs.
  2. 11, 886 BC and TLL (Book Bank) collection.
  3. 1, 18,331 bound volumes of journals.
  4. 67, 512 pamphlets, standards, and reports.
  5. Above 15000  online printed journals

Other Facilities

Kendriya Vidyalaya, Campus School, Guest House, Hospital, Estate Office, etc.

Festivals:

  • Mood Indigo – It is the Annual cultural festival of IIT Bombay which is held in December. It is a four day event and the largest of its kind in Asia
  • Techfest – It is Annual Science and Technology festival held in January. Techfest is the largest science & technology fest in Asia
