About College

Birla College of Art, Science and Commerce was established in 1972 through the dedicated efforts of Kalyan Charity Trust and Kalyan Citizens' Education Society. Kalyan Citizens' Education Society was founded in 1971 through the efforts of prominent citizens of Kalyan and received the benediction of the Late Shri G. D. Birla. The college continues to receive the blessings of Syt. Basant Kumar Birla - Chairman, B. K. Birla Group of Companies and Dr. (Smt.) Sarala Birla.

• The college campus is spread over 20 acres in the prime locality of Kalyan City (54 kms from Mumbai). The distance from Kalyan railawy station to birla college is 3km

• The college has taken initiative to introduce relevant interdisciplinary need-based Career Oriented 'Add on' courses

• The college serves as a study centre of the Yashwant Rao Chawan Maharastra Open University, Nashik

• The college also conduct session for students pursuing education through the Institute of Distance Education, University of Mumbai

• Dr. Avinash Patil has done Industrial Research Project for Pepsico India Holdings Pvt. Ltd. –Cost effective isolation of Reb-A from Stevia leaves

• Dr. Sandesh Jaybhaye – has done project titled „To Study the reactivity of wood charcoal‟ for Century Rayon, Shahad

• Lawsone was isolated by Dr. Naresh Chandra and Dr. (Mrs.) Moitreyee Saha under UGC Major Research Project “In Vitro Culture Studies in Lawsonia inermis L. Generating Coloured Callus for the Mass Production of Herbal Hair Dye and Coloured Streaks‟

• Dr. Naresh Chandra [PI], Dr. (Mrs.) Anita Phatak, Dr. Avinash Patil and Dr. Darshana Patil Dr. P. P. Satpute are jointly working on Major Research Project titled “Screening of some Indian Medicinal Plants for Anticancer Activity‟ funded by National Medicinal Plants Board, Dept. of AYUSH, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Govt. of India (2012). Some of the research finding are very promising

• Ms. Dhiraj Shekhawat completed her research work on “Cleaning the oil contaminated sites by biosufactants”

Extra Curricular

Sports, outdoor and indoor games, gymnasium, NSS, NCC, cultural activities, public speaking, communication skills development, yoga, etc.

• NSS- It is formed at the FY level and under this various social camps and activities are arranged for the students of NSS. Separate NSS office and store room is available in the campus

• NCC- Students are admitted in FY level. There are Army and Navy (Boys and Girls) Units in our College. Parade ground and Motivation room are available for NCC cadets

• Mr. Abhishek Agarwal won Gold Medal for All India Inter-University Squash Rackets Competition and selected for World Inter-University Squash Rackets Competition (2012-13)

• Ms. Snehal Wagh has been selected for the All- India Inter- University Fencing competition

Ranking

The Week, a leading Indian weekly news magazine (5th June, 2011) has ranked Birla College amongst the Best 25 Colleges in the Country in its survey report. In Arts, the College is placed at 12th Rank in the country and 3rd Rank in the West Zone and in Commerce, the College is at 23rd Rank in the country and 8th Rank in the West Zone

Scholarships

• Miss Reeja Nair, student of M.Com. (E-Commerce) Part-II of our College has been selected for Scholarship with full freeship for „Sheriff of Mumbai‟s Scholarship for Women‟ to pursue M.A. - (Human Resource Management) programme at University of Westminister, London, U.K.

• Three of our students have been granted scholarship by Confucius Institute, China. They would be leaving for School of Chinese Language and Culture, Tianjin University of Technology, Tianjin, China.

• Around eleven of our students are pursuing research leading to Ph.D. in different foreign universities. Students have received scholarship to pursue their research work.
