What is a good engineering branch to choose in present days ?

I'm not sure engineering is the right branch to choose in the present climate. With the IT boom receding with every passing year, Indian engineering freshers are slowly being hit by the global market forces which are moving towards automation and robotics. Conventional engineering branches such as mechanical and civil have been hit severely while CS and IT are also becoming outdated and redundant since most colleges do not impart pure coding skills. In my opinion, you should go for engineering only if you feel it is the right career for you. Do not, I repeat, do not choose engineering for the sake of placements after four years.
