Yeah, I went through that exact same headache. Some VPNs claim to be “optimized for macOS,” but that’s rarely true. What helped me was checking best VPN for macOS in China it lists VPNs tested on Apple devices, and that gave me a better idea of which ones actually perform well. I picked one from there, and it’s been solid. I barely notice it’s running, even when I’m using multiple apps.
I’ve noticed my Mac gets sluggish whenever too many background processes are active — even non-VPN ones. Sometimes just cleaning up login items or limiting what runs in the background makes a huge difference. It’s surprising how much smoother everything feels once the system isn’t overloaded.
