About College

Indian Institute of Management Calcutta (IIMC) is one of the best business schools in India and the Asia-Pacific region. IIM Calcutta is a fully autonomous institution and it was the first Indian Institute of Management to be established

  • It was established in the year 1961 (in the month of November) by the Indian Government in partnership with the West Bengal Government and with Alfred P. Sloan School of Management (MIT), the Indian industry and the Ford Foundation.
  • The main campus of IIM Calcutta, covering 135 acres of area, is located in Joka, on the outskirts of Kolkata, India. It is about 20 km from the Howrah Station, 18 km from the Sealdah Station, and 35 km from the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport. The institute moved to its present campus in 1975.
  • IIM Calcutta is the only Indian business school that is a member of the Global Alliance in Management Education (CEMS). As a member of CEMS IIM-C offers the Masters in International Management (MIM), the prestigious degree that has created a global standard of management studies.
  • It offers several postgraduate and doctoral programs in management, as well as a variety of executive education programs. Institute is also engaged in research, consultancy, seminars and academic conferences.
  • There are many centres of excellence in IIMC. The Institute also provides for all requisite facilities in its campus, and the very important one is its library.
  • IIM-C is especially renowned for its finance related courses, and is widely considered to be one of the best business schools in the world for finance.

Academic Overview:

IIM offers some other programs like – Executive Education, Management Program For Armed Forces, Distance Education Programs, Research and Consultancy Programs.

Admission Procedure: IIM-C has a two stage admission procedure. In stage 1 candidates are shortlisted based on CAT (Common Admission Test)

In Stage 2 candidates are provided points for Class X and Class XII percentages of marks.

IIM-C follows Government of India Reservation Policy for admissions.

Extracurricular Activities:

There are several student-run clubs at IIM Calcutta which organize many extracurricular activities. Some of them are listed below-

Centre of Entrepreneurship and Innovation

(CEI)

It provides support for the creation of new business ventures by providing consulting services and is also involved in entrepreneurial research and case development, and organizes various events on the campus.

Operations Club

 

The group has provided numerous live projects to the student community apart from organizing various events of national level like Roti Kapda Makan, State of Affairs, etc. Operations Club has also launched the second edition of PAN IIM Magazine. Recently Operations Club associated with organizations like Amazon, L&T, Kolkata Police for knowledge partnership.

Internet Solutions Group (ISG)

ISG is a team that drives innovation, development, improves workflows, and facilitates the development of cutting-edge technology for the college website and the internet.

Entrepreneurship Cell

The club organizes i2I (Ideas to Implementation), a renowned annual B-plan competition, Ascent, an annual entrepreneurship workshop, and various other events.

Initiative for Community Action (INCA)

It is focused on social work and community action.

Finance & Investments Club (Fin Club)

It collaborates with corporates and academia from the financial sector to provide a platform for students to improve their quantitative and analytical skills.

OutTh!nk

It organizes various competitions based on logical puzzles, strategy, and game theory. The flagship event of OutTh!nk is Pixellated Chaos.

Placement Description:

IIM Calcutta saw 100% placements for the 2012-2014 batch with a great improvement in the roles and compensation. One of the main highlights is the increase in the International roles offered on campus. For example Optiver, Alshaya, Protiviti, Mahindra Comviva, Sharaf DG.

Institute received the highest number of Pre-Placement offers across all IIMs (27 PPOs) in the management consulting domain from the big-4 consulting firms (McKinsey, The Boston Consulting Group, Bain & Co, A. T. Kearney).

Continuing the legacy, IIM Calcutta lived up to its title of the finance campus of India. IIMC received one of the highest numbers of offers for the strongly coveted Investment Banking Divisions (IBD). Citigroup, Bank of America, Merrill Lynch, BNP Paribas, Edelweiss, etc. hired exclusively from IIMC for their IBD roles.

Consulting

Boston Consulting Group, McKinsey, Bain & Co., Accenture Management Consulting, Opera Consulting, Hay Group, and A.T. Kearney were the top recruiting companies in consulting.

Sales and Marketing

All top companies from the areas like FMCG, Media, Healthcare, and Telecom recruited from IIM Calcutta for Sales & Marketing roles. The top FMCG companies were Proctor & Gamble, Hindustan Unilever, ITC, Kraft Cadbury, and Nestle.

General Management

Reliance Industries Limited (RIL), Mahindra and Mahindra, Cairn Energy, and Lodha Group recruited IIM Calcutta students for the General Management roles.

Technology

Microsoft, Amazon, Google, Flipkart, Jabong were the top recruiters in the technology and e-commerce sector.

Amazon made the highest number of offers (16).

Analytics

EXL, Latent View, Bridge i2i were the leading recruiters in this sector.

Facilities:

Academic Blocks

IIM Calcutta's main academic block has four large lecture halls and several additional classrooms.  Another academic building named New Teaching Block was opened in 2000 to supplement the main block.

All classrooms and lecture halls are air-conditioned and have advanced audio-visual and multimedia capabilities.

Auditorium

 The facility seats 750 people and was built at a cost of over 90 million rupees. It is fully air-conditioned and is equipped with ultra-modern equipment including professional audio and visual systems.

Library

Bidhan Chandra Roy Library or BC Roy Memorial Library houses over 160,000 volumes, subscribes to hundreds of management journals and provides access to a large collection of electronic databases consisting of more than 40,000 online full-text journals.

It is the largest management library in Asia and it was built with a grant from Ford Foundation.

Hostels & Accommodation

The four main hostels at IIM-C are- Ramanujan Hostel (Old Hostel), Tagore Hostel & Annexe (White Hostel), New Hostel, and Lake View Hostel.

Financial Research and Training Lab

Established in November 2008, the Financial Research and Trading Lab at IIM Calcutta gives an opportunity to students and faculty members to test financial models with "live" information from the major markets of the world like India's National Stock Exchange, Multi Commodity Exchange, National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange, Bombay Stock Exchange and Bloomberg.

Festivals:

Intaglio

Intaglio is the annual international Business school summit hosted by the Indian Institute of Management Calcutta. The flagship event of IIM-C, it was started in 1992 as the National Schools-Business Meet (NSBM) and is widely acknowledged to be the biggest B-school meet in India.

Lattice

Lattice is the annual business symposium organized by the PGPEX students of IIM Calcutta. It is a platform that facilitates the interaction of students of IIM Calcutta with leaders of Indian society and industry. It is usually held in October.

Carpe-Diem

It is the annual cultural fest organized by the students of IIM Calcutta. It's usually held over a 3-day weekend in February and attracts participation from colleges and schools across India. It is the largest B-School Cultural Fest in Eastern India.
