Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University Act, 1987 received the assent of the President of India on 24 September 1987. By 1991, it was ordered that the Act may be called the Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University, Chennai Act, 1987. This affiliating University started functioning from July 1988 and is governed by the said Act.

• Located in the southern part of the city of Chennai, Tamil Nadu, South India.
• It is 6 kms from Chennai airport and 12 kms from railway station and it’s very easy to reach the university
• Second largest health science university of India
• Named after the former C.M. of Tamil Nadu (late) Dr. M.G. Ramachandran
• In 1987, the Medical University act was passed by President of India but it started working from 1988
• Location of administrative office of this university changed several time but now the address is: Nawab Garden, 69, Anna Salai, Guindy, Chennai-600032
• It promotes researches and disseminates knowledge gained there from.
• Only Medical University in Tamil Nadu which grants affiliation to new institutions under government and self financing in Medical and Health Science
• This also gives a platform to its past and present students to encourage knowledge, contribution, sharing of ideas and helping each other through alumni meets
• It has some objectives: to maintain high quality medical education in the whole state, to institute degrees, diploma and other academic distinctions, to award scholarships, fellowships, exhibitions, medal, prizes in accordance with the status and to develop advance studies and researches from time to time
• It provides the facilities of a regional medical library and virtual library.
